Designs for Hawke's Bay Opera House
|
Theatre Glass
In 2005 Roz was asked by architect Roger Shand of Shand Shelton Architects to come up with some ideas for images that would be used in the upgrade of the Hawke's Bay Opera House precinct. These designs were for new stained glass entrance doors, several fused glass exterior windows and a large set of images to enhance the glass walls of the new court yard area.
These images had to reflect the unique qualities of Hawke's Bay, the elements of the theatre and somehow link the old building styles and the new architecture.
Roz achieved this by combining the Hawke's bay landscape and one of the Art Nouveau proscenium arch motifs and twisting them together to form the fabric of the theatre in the main panels. This fabric then continued up and into the building by means of the long coloured window to unfold inside in all the glorious variety that is the performing arts.
If you ever get a chance to visit Hastings, Hawke's Bay New Zealand take half an hour to tour the Theatre. The interiors boast some of the most magnificent frescos anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
Designed and painted by Tina Carter.

The finished product. The glass panels for the courtyard. I was thrilled!

These glass doors were all sandblasted by Campbell Gordon and his wife Fiona. Campbell went to art school with me in Edinburgh.

The large floral motif comes directly from the Art Nouveau interior.

With such a mixture of styles to work with, Spanish mission exterior, Art Nouveau interior and a modern precinct concept, the team had quite a challenge!
|
|
The imagery on the sandblasted panels wound together and entered the building as a the fabric of the theatre, right of the entrance.

I was also asked to consider designs for large chandeliers that would hang in the main foyer (3 floors high).

With Dale Chihuly as a long time hero The glass team came up with a stunning answer.

The old Spanish Mission enrty doors needed a bit of a revamp too.

I designed the stained glass windows to reflect the fabric theme with a bit of Juan Miro for movement and excitement.
